Fathers are worthy of our appreciation. In our society, mothers are at times singled out for commendation. All the same, we are fond of you, our Fathers, also. We love you. On this great day, we ask God to bless you mightily.
At least 200 people are feared dead with a few able to escape miraculously after fire engulfed them whilst they sought to seek refuge from the rains at the Goil Filling Station at the Kwame Nkrumah Avenue in Accra on June 3, 2015. The President has declared three days of national mourning for the victims.
The rains were torrential the whole day and by nightfall, many areas including the said filling station were flooded. The water reached waist level and many people rushed to seek shelter from the rains at the filling station. Leakage of petroleum products covered the waters which was ignited by a spark. Within minutes, fire passed on the waters and trapped the people seeking shelter at the station and environs. A blast from a tanker at the station sent the fire into a frenzy.
We at Christian Volunteer Service International (CVSI), African Women Initiatives for Development and Empowerment (AWIDE), Productive Agricultural Linkages and Marketing Systems (PALMS), Moringa Oleifera Farms and Industries Limited (MOFIL)and other affiliated organisations mourn with the victims, their families and the nation. May the good Lord protect us from such occurrences as we put forth effective measures to stem such disasters in future.
